809 I, Mary E. Barlow am the widow of Ransom Barlow. I was married to him when I was 14 years old at Smith- field, Johnson County, North Carolina. We moved from there the next year and have been moving off and on ever since. We never have been back and have had no people to correspond with. That is 53 years ago and there is not a soul I know who to write to, for this reason, I can not furnish the testimony of persons who can testify that I lived from the date of my marriage until his death of my husband, other than J.A. Robertson who is the only living witness to my marriage and my eldest daughter Alice Tyer. I am the Mother of L.S. Barlow who served in the war just closed. He enlisted at Van Buren Arkansas, 28th day of August and was discharged at Camp Pike the 15th day of March 1919. He served in C.A. 12th regiment Division 8. He has no claim on the government, I can further say, I and my husband were never parted; neither were we ever divorced but lived together from marriage until his death. Robertson, Mary Edith (I1457)

Both men sustained shock and abrasions, and after treatment at the Base Hospital, were allowed to go home.

827 It is highly likely that a typing error was made some time time ago, and her name is actually CATHERAINE. William and Catherine left In. to go to California with the wagon trains in 1853. Had a brother, Peter, who came to California before 1853, died of consumption soon after.

Went to the California gold fields w/William

An excerpt from a letter written by Annelia to a man gathering information on early the Californian's: Roseville, California March 1, 1926. "My name is Annelia Elizabeth Barter Latyon. I was born March 5, 1852 in Posey County Indiana; crossed the plains in a covered wagon with my father and mother William and Catherine Barter both deceased now. We reached Placerville (Hangtown then) early in the fall of 1853. Stewarts Flan, a live mining town, was our first home and there two years later my mother died. Placer County has always been home to my father and to the Layton family whose youngest son and I married in 1867. My husband died in 1914. Any information or questions that I can answer, I will personally or otherwise. Yours very truly, Mrs Annelia Elizabeth Layton Roseville, Calif.”
Coonrod, Catheraine J (I156)

828 It is possible that Electa's middle name is SUBMIT.

“Said to have been a quaker, and wore quaker garb, also said to have had a Revolutionary Father - who appears to be William Waite - a person of substance whose line went back to the first shipload of Quakers in Plymouth County 164, I believe!” (according to Elliot Evans’ notes).
Wait, Electa (I149)

829 It is possible that the young Mill's child died young. Family files indicate that this child was in fact born 25/11/1841.

Mother listed as Ann Bailey.
Mills (I563)

830 It is thought that Hugh arrived in Canada in 1853 from Scotland. Arrived in Santa Cruz 1883 from Michigan - left Michigan because they were burnt out in the fires - the family sold their last possessions (including the weddings rings) to make the train fare to get to California. Neil stayed in Michigan and began the McKay Printing Company.

From a letter dated Tuesday, April 27, 1954 Will H. Verd writes to Elliot A. P. Evans:
"I would guess you to be a grand son of Hugh and Fanny McKay and a son of their daughter Fanny.  Is that correct?  If so, in digging into the lives of the men you sprung from, do not expect them to be characters dressed in "tails and bow ties."  They were honest, rough, tough fighting men.  In fact, your grandfather Hugh McKay, was on occasion, would shout for all the world to hear, "I am Hugh McKay from Santa Cruz and I have never been licked."  It is my opinion if he was ever defeated in an old fashioned fight, it would have to have been when he was old and decrepit."
McKay, Hugh (I69)
