    Notes
    • Name is recorded as Josh on the marriage record, but oral history states his name was Joe.

Joe Lee was a very lovable rogue, but he liked to drink. He was an American sailor (merchant navy?) who jumped ship in Melbourne. He came from a reasonably wealthy American family (maybe Boston?). During the time Una Alice Abbott knew him, she recalled numerous occasions when his American family would send him money to return to America. He would use the money to go on a bender (out drinking) and one of the family would end up having to retreive him from a pub in Melbourne.

Finally, the family sent tickets on board ship for him to return and he left and said goodbye to Margaret Annie Medwin, went into Melbourne, got on board the boat and cashed in the ticket. He then got off the boat and returned some weeks later to Kooweerup. After Una Alice Abbott and Alonzo Royden King’s marriage failed, they lived with Joe and Margaret at the house in Kooweerup. Joe was very handy, and built a leanto onto the house for Una and the children to live in.

Joe is referred to in “More Mickle Memories of Kooweerup”, but incorrectly as being Scandanavian. It appears he worked as a house painter. [5]
