John Barter and his wife, Mary Foote came to the States in 1819 with their son Richard Foote Barter. My husband's family traces it's Barter roots from John Barter/Mary Foot through their son William. William married Elizabeth Downen. Their son William II Married Catherine Conrad (Coonrad?) they had one child Annelia Who was born in Posey Co.in 1852. William and Catherine left In. to go to California with the wagon trains in 1853. Annelia married a Layton in Calif. There is no Louis in this branch of the family. I am curious as to the source of your information on John Barter and Mary Foote. I have no documentation on them. I know that the family trade was blacksmith and that the wagon they used to get to Calif was made in their shop in Indiana.
