ROBERT LARDEN WAGGONER

Born in the state of Ohio 77 years ago, was one of the chosen men of God to come from our Ohio Methodism to be a good minister of Jesus Christ.
There was a sincerity and earnestness in his life that made him take the high road of truth and justice in all of his relationships of life.
His decision for the ministry came in a quiet hour of meditation and he arose and notified his parents that he was going to college. The years following confirmed his holy decision as he joined the North Ohio Conference in 1892 and after sixteen years of successful ministry he was elected president of Baldwin University, Berea, Ohio. His Alma Mater.
This in itself was an honor that he had justly won for Bro. Waggoner was not only a good minister of the word, he was also a great teacher.
From Baldwin University he entered the active ministry again in the North East Ohio Conference, becoming the secretary of that body and from this appointment he came West.
His influence on the members of his classes lives to-day in the successful men and women who caught the vision of a larger life from his fertile mind. A judge of the supreme Court in Nevada, A consulting engineer with the Kaiser Construction Company, while many nurses and teachers remember him with a deep reverence.
Bro. Wagonner's ministry in the California Conference was outstanding as a teacher of the religious life, his last series of lectures on this subject was give to the teaching staff of our First Methodist School in 1943. He was specially interested in training mothers and church school teachers, so that the children of the home might have an intelligent understanding of the Bible and the greatness of the christian life. His mind was a real storehouse of counsel and true guidance to young people.
Bro. Waggoner had a fine legal mind, he was a member of the bar in Ohio, Nevada and California. His training gave him entree into the legal fraternity of the communities where he lived a proved a special benefit in handling legal matters in connection with property investments of the church.
The following churches were served by our brother in the California Conference, Cedarville, Quincy, Portola, San Rafael and Arcata. He was greatly beloved by all.
He spent his retired years in Santa Cruz and was a teacher of the mens Bible class, in The First Methodist Church, teaching to the last Sunday of his life.
This quiet man of God was busy up to the last hour. When the time came for him to go home October 22nd 1943 he was at his work bench mending clocks for The Goodwill Industry store. One of his hobbies, making no charge for his work.
Services were conducted in Santa Cruz, Oct. 25th, 1943 by Rev. John F. Wilson, his Pastor, assisted by Red. Hubert Doran and Rev. Chas. W. Null. His presence in the last prayer meeting was a mark that: "I HAVE KEPT THE FAITH".
